Teeth Alignment – Orthodontics

Teeth alignment is the arrangement of the teeth in relation to their supporting bone or alveolar process, adjacent teeth, the oral soft tissues and opposing dentition. This can be done at any stage in life (age) and involves the use of some appliances – orthodontic appliances or braces.

Broadly speaking, there are two classes of orthodontic appliances – removable and fixed. Removable appliances are effective in achieving a limited range of movements on the teeth or modifying the growth pattern of the jaws and are thus mainly used on children. To achieve more complex movements on the teeth or for treatment of adults, fixed appliances are desirable.

It is important to have teeth well aligned to optimize the aesthetics – looks, but more so function – chewing, biting, speaking, swallowing and breathing.
