Usually, these can be complete (replacing all the teeth) or partial (replacing only some of the teeth) and can be removable (meaning the patient can take them out at will) or fixed (meaning patient will not be able to take them out) or a combination of these.
Partial dentures often referred to simply as partials, fill in gaps in patients’ smiles. A gum-coloured base is shaped to fit between teeth and support the replacement teeth. The partial is held in place with clasps connected to remaining dental structures. Full dentures are similarly composed by attaching a row of replacement teeth to a gum-coloured base. Instead of attaching to healthy teeth, the full denture is moulded to fit comfortably against the gums where it is stabilized through natural suction. Complete dentures can also be supported by dental implants.
The fixed prostheses are usually dental bridges supported by the surviving natural teeth or dental implants, or implant-supported crowns.
